FAQs

Q?

My log home is a fair distance from Kansas City. Can you work with me?

A.

We have traveled to all the surrounding states and beyond for projects, but of course it makes sense to say closer if we can. We can at least have a talk and see if it is smart for you and for us to take up the project.

Q?

What’s the deal with the logs? Is it all that important exactly with ones to choose? And doesn’t kiln-drying take care of the moisture content?

A.

We could write a book. Suffice to say here that yes, it matters a whole lot about the logs. The most important consideration in log construction is log shrinkage, and we understand it intimately and take steps to make it a non-problem. That’s why we use logs that have been dead so long-they have moisture content down to a range of 6-11%, whereas kiln drying takes greener trees from a start of about 22% only to about 19%. The ensuing shrinkage causes roof separation, gaps, leaks, cracked fireplaces and all manner of trouble. The wrong log is very likely the reason you are reading this website.

Q?

Your site makes me think log homes are risky, maybe prone to structural issues. Are most log home owners in for trouble?

A.

Any homeowner knows that there are going to be maintenance issues with their residence. That’s a part of the deal, and yes, log homes can be especially susceptible to problems-if they weren’t built right, such as with inappropriate chinking, green or kiln dried logs. At Modern Log Homes and Timberframe, we frankly know we build the best and most durable homes with the right wood, and that we can usually restore damaged or shoddily built homes to the promise of durability and comfort you seek in a log home.
